Position Overview

Working in close collaboration with the Head of Analysis, the Senior Data Scientist will provide comprehensive and high quality research data management services for CIDRZ researchers. S/he will lead activities and provide hands on support for data management, database design, data merger and validation, curation, data synthesis, data archiving, and data visualization. The Senior Data Scientist will also support the analysis process by overseeing the details of code writing and executing analysis. S/he will be responsible for maintaining data sharing policies and ensuring data archiving SOPs are up to date. The Senior Data Scientist will mentor junior data scientists in practical skills in data management, data science, coding, computer programming and data analysis.

Main duties
  • Collaborates with investigators to provide support on specific projects, creation of data management plans – review of data collection tools, advise on data capture platforms, database design, validation, curation, analysis and archiving.
  • Develops and administers CIDRZ’s research data repository, taking responsibility for uploading datasets, creating high quality metadata, and developing processes for adding, and structuring inputs.
  • Engages with CIDRZ researchers and encourages compliance with CIDRZ’s Data Protection and Sharing Policy, funders data sharing requirements, and maximizes deposit of research data into CIDRZ data repository.
  • Support data science excellence in all CIDRZ projects, including for data pulls from national databases/ warehouses/ EHRs, and data visualization.
  • Keeps up to date with developments in research data management, establishing future requirements and making recommendations to improve and develop the services offered to CIDRZ’s researchers.
  • Provides training, mentorship and support to CIDRZ’s researchers and programme implementers on data management, including practical safeguarding of data and ethical considerations in data management, innovative database design, analysis and result dissemination both locally and internationally.
  • Contributes to improving CIDRZ’s research output including peer-reviewed journal articles, abstracts, and conference papers.
  • Undertakes such other duties and responsibilities as may be required within the level of the post.
Qualifications
  • PhD required in health data science, computer science, information science, or research-intensive discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in industry, academia, and or non-profit research organisations preferred.
  • Knowledge of the research environment in non-profit research organizations and an understanding of the principles of research data management.
  • Experience of working with an information system in a non-profit research organization, such as a research data repository, or open access repository.
  • Experience of administering and or developing a research data repository with a knowledge of data management plans and the data requirements of research funding bodies.
  • Excellent people manager and mentor of scientific staff to build high performing team.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to scientific and lay audiences.
  • Has broad appreciation of relevant software and applications, e.g., SQL, Python, R. JavaScript, Open Data Kit (ODK), KoboToolBox etc.
