Reports to  MDR TB Coordinator. The incumbent is responsible for providing extensive psychosocial support to patients during treatment, strengthening appointment systems at MDR TB clinics and supporting contact tracing of MDR/RR TB patients.   

Main duties
  • Ensures that all Drug resistant (DR) TB patients receive extensive counseling on MDR/RR TB at start of treatment including the treatment plan, importance of adherence, possible side effects, when to immediately return to a facility, roles of health workers in patient management and their responsibilities as patients.
  • Provides ongoing psychosocial support to patients on treatment as required.
  • Ensures there are regular adherence talks given to clients waiting to get treatment and highlight the importance of clients keeping their appointments and taking their medication on time
  • Strengthens the appointment system at DR TB initiation facilities to ensure that patients keep their appointments and those who don’t are tracked immediately either by phone or in the community as required. 
  • Keeps a tracking log of contact tracing to ensure that the contacts to DR TB cases are screened for TB every 6 months for a period of 2 years from when the index case was diagnosed. 
  • Provides HIV counseling and testing services to diagnosed DR TB cases with unknown HIV status
  • Ensures that all newly diagnosed HIV clients are linked to HIV care and treatment.
  • Works closely with the nurses and clinical teams at the MDR TB initiation facilities to ensure that DR TB registers are updated as required.

Qualifications
  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Diploma in Social Sciences 
  • Training in and experience in counseling for various conditions
  • Proficiency in HIV testing
  • At least 3-years relevant working experience 
  • Proficiency in MS word and MS Excel and PowerPoint
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision
  • Must be a team player
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills
